What is FAQ schema and does it still show in Google?

FAQ schema is FAQPage structured data that labels a list of questions and answers on a page. It used to earn expandable answers under a Google result. Google limited that feature to well-known government and health sites in 2023 and then stopped showing it in Search in May 2026, so adding it no longer produces that result.

Why it matters

Many older tutorials still tell site owners to add FAQ markup to win extra space in search results. Following that advice now costs time and adds code to maintain without the promised display. Knowing the current position helps you spend effort on the visible questions and answers that readers actually use.

How to decide what to do

  1. View your page source and search for FAQPage to see whether you have the markup.
  2. Check that the questions and answers in the markup match the visible text exactly. Markup that describes content not on the page is a problem whatever its purpose.
  3. If the markup is correct, you can leave it. Google has not said that existing markup causes harm, and the content remains valid schema.org data.
  4. If it is generated by a plugin you no longer need, turning that setting off is a reasonable cleanup.
  5. Keep the visible FAQ section itself. Readers still get quick answers, and clear question headings help people scan the page.

A simple FAQPage block looks like this:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "How do I submit a sitemap?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Add it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps."
    }
  }]
}
</script>

Common mistakes

  • Adding FAQ markup to gain a rich result that Google no longer shows.
  • Removing the visible questions along with the markup, which loses real value for readers.
  • Marking up questions that are not on the page.
  • Using FAQ markup for advertising copy or for a single question with a promotional answer.
  • Leaving broken markup in place without testing it.

Frequently asked questions

Is FAQ schema bad for SEO now?

Google has not described existing FAQ markup as harmful. It simply no longer leads to the FAQ rich result, so it is optional.

Should I delete FAQ schema from old pages?

There is no need to rush. Remove it when you next edit the template, or leave it if it is valid and matches the page.

Does a visible FAQ section still help?

Yes. A clear section with question headings helps visitors find answers quickly, and well-structured pages are easier for search engines to read.
