How do I use the Rich Results Test?

Open search.google.com/test/rich-results, enter a page address or paste code, and run the test. The tool reports which rich result types it found on the page, lists errors that stop a page from being eligible, and lists warnings about optional properties. A pass means eligibility, not a promise that Google will show anything.

Why it matters

Structured data fails quietly: a page can look perfect while its markup is broken. The Rich Results Test shows what Google's systems can read, so you can fix errors early.

How to do it

  1. Go to search.google.com/test/rich-results.
  2. Choose how to test. The URL option fetches a live, public page. The code option takes pasted HTML, which is useful for markup that is not published yet.
  3. Pick the smartphone crawler if the tool asks, because Google mostly indexes the mobile version of pages.
  4. Run the test and wait for the result.
  5. Read the summary. Each detected type, such as Article, Breadcrumb or Product, shows counts of valid items, errors and warnings.
  6. Open a detected item to see the exact properties and the line of code each message refers to.
  7. Use the option to view the tested page to check the rendered HTML, which shows whether your markup was present once scripts had run.
  8. Fix the code, publish, and test again.

How to read the results

  • Error: a required or critical property is missing or wrong, and the item is not eligible for the rich result.
  • Warning: an optional but recommended property is missing. The item can still be eligible.
  • No items detected: the markup may be absent, written in a type that has no rich result, or not visible to the tool.

The tool only evaluates structured data types that Google supports for rich results. For other schema.org types, use the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org.

Common mistakes

  • Treating warnings like errors and spending hours on optional properties.
  • Testing the wrong URL, such as a staging address blocked from crawling.
  • Assuming a pass means a rich result will definitely appear in Search.
  • Testing once and never re-testing after a template change.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rich Results Test need my site to be verified?

No. You can test any public URL or any code you paste, with no sign-in or site ownership needed.

Why does the test pass but no rich result appears?

Eligibility is only one condition. Google decides what to show based on the query, the page and its own quality systems.

How is it different from the URL Inspection tool?

The Rich Results Test is about structured data eligibility. URL Inspection in Search Console shows how Google indexed a specific page on your verified site.
